What I can do to make myself stand out amongst the millions of other people wanting a career in the same field. How can I guarantee that I leave a lasting impression on the company that I wish to one day work for?
Good questions. My best tip for leaving a lasting impression is to approach your career with a business mindset to understand how companies are thinking about filling their positions. Then, it is easier to understand and see what it is that they really need and value allowing you to act and position yourself in alignment with those needs.
One way to stand out is to focus on developing and leveraging your areas of specialized skills and knowledge. Work on defining and developing your professional brand. Analyze trends and try to predict where the market is heading to give you clues as to what is in demand and where the gaps are in specialized knowledge and skills.
For example, people in sales put a lot of thought into understanding their customer's needs, pains, and values so they can present a deliverable that speaks directly to the customer. If we think of our employers as customers and look for opportunities to add value and serve them well using this approach, we are in a better position to make an impression that we understand the big picture and are on the same page as them with the goals they wish to achieve.
