How to Make a Decision About a Job Offer

Are you struggling with making a decision about a job change?
Here are three quick questions to ask yourself:
  1. Does it get you closer to your professional goals?
  2. Will it provide the income you need?
  3. Is the downside protected?

Does it get you closer to your professional goals?

Are you clear about the next steps and trajectory of your career? What are your specific career goals in both the short-term and the long-term? Are you looking to skill up? Gain experience and knowledge in a particular industry? Are you simply looking to earn an income until the next best job offer? Or are you bored in your current position and looking for growth? Clarity around these questions will help you make the decision about whether or not this is a good choice.

Will it provide the income you need?

Will acceptance of this job offer provide the income that you need? In other words, does it satisfy your minimum viable income needs? If you are to leave a current position to accept this position will it sustain you?

Is the downside protected?

If you accept this job, will you be okay if it does not work out? What is your backup or recovery plan? Are there ways that accepting this job offer will be more harmful than helpful? If so, how will you protect yourself?

If you can answer yes to these three questions, then you know what to do.
